External Beam Radiotherapy

External beam radiotherapy uses high-energy radiation delivered by a specialised machine outside the body to treat tumours of the eye and surrounding tissues.

Modern techniques allow precise targeting of the tumour, while minimising exposure to the surrounding healthy tissues as much as possible. Depending on the type and characteristics of the tumour, treatment may be delivered in a single session or multiple sessions.

Who it is for

External beam radiotherapy may be recommended for selected ocular tumours, particularly when plaque brachytherapy is not suitable, for larger tumours, or when the location of the tumour within the eye makes plaque brachytherapy less appropriate.

The choice of treatment is individualised and depends primarily on the size, location, and characteristics of the tumour, as well as the individual characteristics of each patient.

What to expect

Before treatment, detailed imaging studies and specialised treatment planning are performed to precisely define the area to be treated. The treatment itself is usually painless and does not require anaesthesia.

You will need to attend a series of short treatment sessions. You can usually return home after each session.
